What we offer

Our work weaves together our natural world with classroom subjects, from science and geography to art and design.

The amazing habitats across our learning centres are bursting with life that wriggles and crawls, flies and swims. They're the perfect base to learn about living things.

From wetlands to beaches and woodlands to veg patches, our sites are perfect for a nature-filled experience!

Most of our workshops are half day sessions. However, these can be combined with other options for a full day visit.

Group sizes

We cater for community groups too, whether you are U3A or Scouting, there is something for everyone to get involved in. Looking for something more informal for your group? We can do that too, just get in touch.

Maximum booking numbers are applicable on a site-by-site basis. When making an enquiry, please provide further details where possible in the 'preferred dates' box on the form.

Please note, that a minimum charge applies to group sizes of less than 20.

Potteric Carr workshops

Natural Navigator Learn some practical map reading skills and put them to use navigating around the nature reserve! Set some clues for your class mates to follow to find the treasure!  Half day KS1, KS2
Nature Explorer Delve into the diverse habitats of Potteric Carr, and discover the amazing creatures that live there. Look at woodlands, meadows, ponds and reedbeds. Full day EYFS, KS1, KS2
Stone Age Connect with the stone age and experience making a fire, Stone Age story telling, shelter building, and making jewellery. Full day KS1, KS2
Sampling and Surveying Delve into the science behind biological surveying and the impact this has on nature , biodiversity and management of nature reserves. Full day KS3, KS4, A-Level

Dig, Cook and Eat Have fun learning about where food comes from, how it gets from the field to our plates, and enjoy a healthy meal you’ve prepared yourself. Get acquainted with ideas like climate and seasonality, food miles and identifying and classifying vegetables, all through hands-on activities. Full day

Roots, Shoots and Habitats to Boot Experience the world of plants close-up! Dig deep and go hunting in the kitchen garden to discover the wonders of growth cycles and the wonderful creatures that help provide super-power nutrition. Plant your very own vegetable at the end of the session to take home with you! Full day KS1, KS2
Hidden Ecosystems Explore nature's weirdest and wildest homes and the importance of the impact that they have on our environment. Take a look into the fascinating world of decomposers. Half day KS4, KS5

Spurn workshops

Workshop Synopsis Length Stage
The Sea and Me Sadly, litter is now a common sight on our beaches. In the Discovery Room, we'll explore the different types of litter that we find washed up on Yorkshire's beaches, before heading onto the shore for a beach clean. For each item of litter we find, we'll be asking the questions: what is it? Where did it come from? How long does it take to break down and how does it affect marine wildlife? Half day KS1, KS2
Spurn Safari A ride on the unimog down the spit and a climb up the light house. Depending on the focus, either looking at the history of Spurn or the wildlife of Spurn. Whilst one group is on the Safari, the others take part in a self led session.  (separate charges apply, £10 pp) Half day Age 4+
Unbeatable Ungulates The tour will last at least 2 hours and will be conducted by a member of staff or volunteer who suits the visitors’ needs. During the tour the links between farming, conservation and food production will be explained, using the land as a classroom. Half day KS1, KS2
Spurn Superheroes You'll discover the fascinating wildlife that lives at Spurn. We will explore the biodiversity of the penninsula, and explore the adaptations that wildlife has developed to thrive. Hedgerow bug hunt and fossils, birds and meadow bug hunt, strandline search, flowering plants Half day KS1, KS2
Changing Coastline Discover how the coastline around Spurn National Nature Reserve is ever-changing and delve further into the creation of Spurn Point through longshore drift. We'll be exploring the cliff and boulder clay around Spurn to see how coastal erosion has impacted human life by the sea. Half day KS2

Living Seas Centre workshops

Workshop Synopsis Length Stage
Seashore Safari Dive into life on the rocky shore and discover the weird and wonderful marine creatures that lives in Yorkshire’s rockpools. We’ll seek out seaweeds, hunt for hermit crabs and search for starfish! Learn how to identify the organisms you find living on the rocky shore and discover the amazing ways in which they are adapted to their environment. Half day

Changing Coastlines Discover how the sea has shaped Flamborough Head and how coastal erosion continues to change the headland. Explore how the chalk cliffs were formed and make your own coccolithophore. Half day KS2, KS3
Seashore Sampling Delve into the role of a marine scientist and discover the weird and wonderful marine life that lives in Yorkshire’s rockpools. Learn how to use quadrats and transect lines to sample the rocky shore, develop your identification skills, and explore how biodiversity changes along the shore. Half day KS3, KS4
Above and Below

Above and Below involves a 2-hour session at both Yorkshire Wildlife Trust’s Living Seas Centre and RSPB Bempton Cliffs, with each site situated just a few miles apart on the Flamborough Headland. Here, students will get the chance to learn about exciting wildlife found above and below the waves. At Bempton Cliffs, children can experience the sights, sounds and smells of one of the UK’s largest seabird colonies. Then at the Living Seas Centre, students will head out on a Seashore Safari to discover the fascinating marine wildlife that can be found on the rocky shore.

*Please note, this session is charged at £12 per person plus VAT.
