Our journey to becoming an eco-friendly business

Read about the steps this new, coastal business has taken to help save our seas!

Boathouse Burger and Grill has recently celebrated its 1st birthday. It’s certainly a strange time to open a new business as some noted, but this demanding year has allowed me to adapt quickly, embrace change and respond to the environmental challenges we are confronted with.

After a busy start, we had very little time to plan and had to quickly tackle the increasing ethical pressures all small businesses face. My main aim was to become ethically minded, create impact and take positive steps in helping our local area and wildlife. Little did I expect, was the huge challenges we would face in litter pollution, the logistics of waste disposal, product shortages and having to fight the losing battle with the rising cost of eco-friendly packaging. However, with all this in mind, we have a lot of celebrate and I now have the chance to reflect on the steps we have taken during our first year, and how we are now a driving force for change. The importance of protecting our beaches and wildlife has been instilled in me from a young age.

The importance of protecting our beaches and wildlife has been instilled in me from a young age.

Coming from a local fishing family who have worked closely with Yorkshire Wildlife Trust, I am conscious of the tenacious attitude you need to make a difference. Now being in a privileged position to influence from my own business decisions, I knew my priority was to educate people and to set an example.

Because of our location, there are no access to public bins on the beach which unfortunately results in heavy litter pollution, particularly throughout the summer months. To overcome this, I provided both general waste and recycling bins with signage, which are disposed into my business waste facilities, at my own cost and disposal efforts. During our busy shifts, we take the time to clear the beach of rubbish - mainly disposable BBQ’s, used nappies and empty bottles. As thanks to local litter pickers for their dedication and commitment to keeping our beach tidy, we give them free drinks throughout the year. (Pictured – Graham) In addition to this I made the decision to remove the majority of our single use plastics, source recyclable packaging and offer discounts to those who bring their own drinks cups.

A huge aspect of our ethical success is that I have also surrounded my business with people who share similar values. I have a team of local employees, many of which walk to work daily and most of my products are sourced from local suppliers.

A lot of my packaging is bought locally and in bulk, reducing waste and our carbon footprint. We have also developed strong relationships with various local organisations including The Yorkshire Seal Group, as well as Yorkshire Wildlife Trust who have provided us with signage, information leaflets and general guidance on protecting our area, including caring for injured wildlife.

This year has been a huge ethical success for us, and I am extremely proud of the small differences we have already made. Next year, my priorities will remain the same and I look forward to working more closely with Yorkshire Wildlife Trust in being able to educate, drive change and make a difference to our local beaches.
