Yorkshire’s seas were once full of wildlife but due to decades of human neglect and harm, they are falling silent and empty.
In the Humber estuary, there was once a lush seagrass meadow and a native oyster reef so dense that it posed a hazard to ships! Sadly today less than 5% of that seagrass meadow remains and the dense oyster reef is now a distant memory.
But there's good news! Yorkshire Wildlife Trust's expert marine team are at the forefront of pioneering techniques and innovative methods to restore native oysters and seagrass to Spurn National Nature Reserve.
The marine learning pack includes lesson plans, PowerPoint presentations, quizzes and practical activities for Key Stage 2, 3 and 4, focussing on oysters and seagrass, marine ecosystems and food webs, and how Yorkshire Wildlife Trust are restoring these super species that are helping to tackle the climate crisis.
